Who Supports the Crew Behind India’s Biggest TV Shows?

When we think about the entertainment industry, we usually picture the actors and the glamorous sets. We rarely think about the camera operators, the lighting teams, and the support staff who work incredibly long hours to bring our favorite daily shows to life.

Like millions of other workers in the unorganized sector, many of these behind the scenes crew members do not have access to formal social security or awareness about government welfare schemes.

Recently, I wanted to find a way to get our Workers of India Hindi booklets into their hands at Filmcity in Mumbai. Since I could not personally go to the sets, I reached out to someone who could help bridge that gap. I am incredibly grateful to Gulshan Shah, the Director of Photography for the popular TV serial Anupamaa.

He generously stepped in and took the time to distribute the booklets to the camera people and support team right there on the set. Through his help, the crew was introduced to the e-Shram card and the benefits they and their families are eligible for.

It was a strong reminder that informal workers are everywhere, even making the magic happen just behind the camera. It also proved that community support is everything. When people within the industry are willing to lend a hand, this awareness can reach places I could never access all on my own.
